Sketch Series 2

Retail Space, Restaurant Space, Gallery Space

Retail Space- Anthropologie at Friendly Center in Greensboro, NC

The spaces filled with so many warm and vibrant colors. The lighting fills the space with a nice warm glow. There where recessed lighting with fluorescent lamps from the ceiling. MR-16 Track lamps from the ceiling also directed to displays on the walls. The direct light on some of the colors and reflective surfaces on the shelves creates quite an intense wall washing effect that is bright and directs the focus on the merchandise.

Restaurant Space- Fern in Charlotte, NC
Over head lights hung over the dinning table in a bright collection resembling a chandler made of mason jars and incandescent lamps. It filled the table top with a intimate and familiar warm glow. The walls were washed with MR-16 running track lamps create a warm glow off of the side walls. The space creates an ideal blend of bright warm qualities that help create an warm and inviting effect.

Gallery Space- Weatherspoon Art Gallery at UNCG in Greensboro, NC
Incandescent over head lights allow for the space to have soft overhead glow that allows more for way finding purposes, while track lighting focused on washing and grazing the walls allows for the pieces of art to receive the most attention and creates for the eye to connect to the works of art being displayed within the space. There is also a slight amount of ambient natural light coming into the space.

Sketch Series 1

August 30, 2012 3:00 PM

I have chosen my dining area. The light filling the space is very bright and warm. It feels most of the space, and it seems to have a very heating effect on the space. The reflective surface of the table is very shinny in this light. The wooden floor is more scuffed and reflects much less than that table. It creates a warm glow through the white blinds that are pulled up.

6:00 PM

It is rainy today and there is just a cool gray light slightly filling up the room. Everything looks more gray. It has a cool feeling. It creates a deep shadow on the wooden bowl in the room. The area is very dim. I noticed that throughout the day, and even it not being sunny, you could still tell that the light changed throughout the day. I noticed that even with thick cloud coverage, noon seemed to be one of the brightest times of the entire day. At 6:00 PM there is no real light coming through anymore. Not that this day was very sunny. The light starts dimming in the space shortly after 1:00.

September 10, 2012 3:00 PM

Today has been a very bright and sunny day. The day does seem to be losing some of the summer bright rays and they seem to be changing into autumn already. The sun doesn't seem as direct. The heat seems to have dropped greatly being projected from the sunlight as well. It seems to hold a lighter yellowish white.

September 27, 2012 3:00 PM

Today was a sunny day. The sun is coming in much warmer and brighter than I have seen. The color has more orange/red in it and it feels the space with very intense light. Since the season is beginning to shift the sunset seems more shifting and it is coming much earlier than days in the previous months. I can see much longer and darker shadows being projected into the room.

October 4, 2012 3:00 PM
It has been a little over a month since I began recording the natural lighting and its effects in my dinning room. The sun seems to not be feeling the space as strongly as it was. It seems to be only filling half of the room anymore. The light is less intense in the room now. I can clear see a change as autumn approaches.
